The Pakistan Navy recently celebrated a major milestone with the launch of its 4th MILGEM corvette warship from the Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW). This locally constructed vessel is part of an ambitious collaboration between Pakistan and Turkey to enhance Pakistan’s naval capabilities.
The MILGEM corvette program involves the joint production of four warships based on the design of the Turkish Navy’s ADA-class corvettes. The first corvette was commissioned last year while two more are currently under construction at KS&EW along with the recently launched fourth ship.
The launch ceremony was attended by top leadership from the Pakistan Navy, KS&EW, and Turkish defense contractor ASFAT. In his remarks, the Chief Naval Overseer emphasized the importance of acquiring modern surface platforms through self-reliance to safeguard Pakistan’s maritime interests.
These state-of-the-art corvettes span over 90 meters in length and feature modern combat management systems. They are equipped with anti-ship missiles, air defense systems, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities enabling them to undertake a diverse range of naval operations.
Industry experts have praised the successful collaboration between Pakistan and Turkey in designing and inducting these warships. The program represents a major achievement for Pakistan’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. Analysts expect the remaining MILGEM ships to be commissioned over the next two years, serving as a powerful element within the Pakistan Navy’s expanding fleet.
