Mazda has revived its iconic RX-7 sports car in the form of a new retro-inspired concept called the RX-7 SP. Unveiled at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show, the stunning concept brings back the classic styling of the third-generation FD RX-7 from the 1990s but with a modern twist.
At the heart of the RX-7 SP lies a new rotary engine that Mazda says pumps out around 370 horsepower. That’s a solid bump up from the twin-turbocharged 13B-REW engine that powered the FD RX-7 and made it a tuner favorite. The new rotary fits neatly into the concept’s long hood design and rear-wheel drive layout.
The overall shape of the RX-7 SP is vintage Japanese sports car perfection. It has a simple, lightweight design with a low, wide stance. Iconic cues include the forward-slanting front end, pop-up headlights, smooth sides, and large rear wing. The interior features a minimalist dashboard and seats designed for spirited driving.
According to Mazda, the RX-7 SP concept focuses on the joy of driving. It’s meant to deliver an “exhilarating and responsive” experience behind the wheel thanks to its high-revving rotary powerplant. The manual transmission and intelligent chassis enhance the sports car feel.
For now, the stunning RX-7 SP remains just a concept. But the overwhelmingly positive reaction from the Tokyo Auto Show suggests Mazda would be smart to consider putting this retro ride into production. The return of the rotary engine also hints at more rotor-powered models to come.
Over 30 years since the original RX-7 debuted, the RX-7 SP concept proves that this iconic sports car still has an enthusiastic fanbase. By combining retro style with modern performance, Mazda has revived the RX-7 magic in stunning fashion.
