Early last year Mellissa, the founder of Tiny but Mighty Kitten Rescue, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, received a message regarding a heavily pregnant cat wandering the streets. As soon as she saw a photo of the feline’s huge belly she knew she had to be taken into care as quickly as possible.
“At the time, we had extremely cold temperatures, lots of snow and ice on the ground. I saw one picture of her outside with her huge belly and I immediately said ‘yes,’” Melissa said.
“Earning her trust is going to take time because being inside and around people is new to her. She is very unsure and naturally wanting to protect herself and her unborn babies.”
Understandably, Missy spent the first few days hiding in her room, taking short trips to explore every nook and cranny, taking her time to get used to her new surroundings.
“Earning her trust, one @inaba_churu at a time I am able to get my hand really close to her without her backing up in fear. She also closes her eyes when I talk to her now!”
And before long Melissa had Missy quite literally eating out of her hand. And by day four, the once-frightened feline allowed Melissa to pet her head.
As Missy became more and more relaxed her confidence grew to the point where she would now allow Melissa’s company while she ate her meals.
Shortly after that Melissa was surprised to walk into the room and find two tiny verbals glued to their new mum’s side.
“She felt more comfortable birthing on her own which is why I did not provide updates. I had to let her do her own thing while monitoring through the window and on the security camera. I spotted a 5th baby that was hidden before,” Melissa said.
“There isn’t much room in the kitty kasa so I’m hoping in a day or so I’ll be able to move them to the pop up play pen.”
Without a doubt, it was clear from the outset that Missy had been taken off the streets in the nick of time.
Thankfully, she had not been forced into the hopeless situation of trying to give birth in below-freezing temperatures.
Though Missy was very protective of her new family she allowed Melissa to gently pet them, in the process showing how much she had begun to trust her foster mum. As the nest was so cramped, Melissa took the opportunity to move the young family to a new one.
“She didn’t seem upset or stressed at all! Babies are back with mama, as happy as could be. I’m hearing some tiny purrs at the milk bar!”
By the time they were three weeks old, an ever-watchful mum had a litter of very active kittens to watch over. Their eyes now open day were a joy to watch as they tumbled and played before going right back to nursing.
“It has been one of the most special transformations to witness! Her future is so bright because she will eventually be fully vetted and spayed, so she no longer has to worry about endless pregnancies and caring for kittens,” Mellissa said.
“I know with time she will find her perfect forever family who will be patient, loving and understanding of everything she has gone through.”
