Baikal Lake is described by Russian photographer Alexey Trofimov as “the pearl that does not need to be cut.” It is the world’s oldest, biggest, purest, and deepest freshwater lake. The crystal pure lake water freezes into magnificent gem-like ice that glistens in the sunlight every winter when temperatures drop well below zero.
As the lake freezes unevenly throughout its surface, some blocks are forced up onto the frozen lake’s surface, creating the stunning sculptures. Trofimov has visited the lake on numerous occasions to photograph these “gems” in all their splendor.
Trofimov has a number of photography projects that capture Lake Baikal in various seasons. The photographs are available on his website.
