A 36-point effort from Pascal Siakam kept the Pacers in the game. In addition to Myles Turner’s 20 points, five other Pacers also scored in double figures. As they continue to compete for eighth place, the LakersIf the Lakers want to avoid winning back-to-back single-elimination Play-In games, the No. 8 seed is crucial. They won that one game to maximize their place in the Play-In the last two times they were in the tournament, both times as the No. 7 seed. The Denver Nuggets are the current No. 1 seed, and they will have a tough time with their No. 9 qualifying position.

If the Lakers want to avoid a 1-8 loss to the Nuggets, they should aim to finish in eighth place, then defeat the Mavericks, Kings, or Suns to secure the seventh spot and a potential meeting with the Thunder or Timberwolves. The franchise’s main focus moving ahead should be this.

Two more games remain between the Mavericks and the Kings, who must play each other twice more, and the Lakers, who are 2.5 games behind. Just three games separate the Suns and the Lakers for the sixth spot, and the Suns still have one of the toughest remaining schedules. In the event that any of these three clubs falter in the final minutes, the Lakers may theoretically take over the top spot.

They will be monitoring the resurging Houston Rockets, who have been the Lakers’ anticipated Play-In opponent for the majority of the season but are now only one game behind the Warriors in the No. 10 slot.
