Ferrari is set to launch a new, special edition of the SF90, which should be called the SF90 Le Mans, as Ferrari returns to the great endurance race.
Ferrari is having a great run at the moment. It’s doing well in the WEC with its new 499P hypercar, and its own road-going hypercar is well into its testing program. It has also launched some rather spectacular supercars over the last couple of years. Such as the Daytona SDP3 and the 296 GTB. One other Ferrari on the way is the new, special edition version of the Ferrari SF90, a car to gain some major aerodynamic upgrades over the current SF90.
Like the new hypercar, the special version of the SF90 has been spied out and about near Maranello and its reveal may come as soon as June 10th. Just in time for the centennial edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours, in which Ferrari is once again competing at the top level.
The New Ferrari SF90 Special Should Gain The Le Mans Moniker
Amidst all the photos of the new Ferrari, the one thing that most people are confident about is the name of the new car. The new SF90 is set to gain the Le Mans name, creating the SF90: Le Mans or SF90 LM. The June rumored reveal date for the Le Mans is apt as that is the time the 24 Hours of Le Mans will take place. Rumors suggest the car will have its public unveiling at the Circuit de la Sarthe where the race is held. The LM will come some four years after Ferrari first introduce the SF90 Stradale.
The car has been spied out and about during testing in spy photos, with the LM currently wrapped in camouflage. A large rear wing and very interesting rear end are the current standout features, with an aggressive diffuser a step up from the regular SF90. The front sees plenty of change to the car as well. With a new split nose and modified central support the big changes, along with a much more pronounced splitter arrangement. Masking tape is currently covering the wheels, suggesting a new design is incoming for the final, production version of the car.
Spy Images Have Leaked The New SF90 Le Mans Final Form
While Ferrari has tried to keep the car’s final form as hidden as possible, some very interesting images did appear on Instagram in April. These images looked to have leaked the production form of the new supercar. The large rear wing on the prototype is present in its uncovered glory. While the front splitter looks much more pronounced without the camouflage. The front fascia as a whole is very aggressive, and that new central support is easy to spot. It’s a dramatically different-looking car compared to the SF90 Stradale.
The SF90 Le Mans’s new rear diffuser is also visible in the photographs. Sadly, the finer details are not fully visible with the images being quite blurry. The size of it is distinguishable, however, while the taillights are equally dramatic and different compared to the standard SF90. Ferrari has done a lot of work to ensure the new SF90 Le Mans is as different as possible from its predecessor. And the new car looks to have much sharper and more aggressive lines than the slightly more curvy and elegant SF90 Stradale.
V8 Power Is Expected Under The Hood Of The SF90 Le Mans
The power unit under the hood of the new SF90 Le Mans isn’t confirmed yet. But it’s expected that the SF90s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine will be under the hood, returning with hybrid assistance. To further differentiate the two supercars, the power output is likely to go beyond the 986 hp of the Stradale. We may see the new SF90 Le Mans top the 1,000 hp barrier. With all these extra aerodynamic components, it could make the new Ferrari an absolute demon when it comes to its racetrack performance. A 0-62 mph of 2.5 seconds and a top speed north of 211 mph would be likely performance figures.
Ferrari is going through an interesting time at the moment when it comes to its engines. The upcoming hypercar, set to make its debut in 2024 for the 2025 model year, will not have a V12 engine like its predecessor, LaFerrari did. Instead, the SF90 Stradale’s V8 may make its way under the hood of the new hypercar. With there still a chance the 296 GTB’s 3.0-liter V6 could be the power unit of choice. It marks the beginning of a shift for Ferrari away from big V12s, and towards V8s or V6s with hybrid power.
This is despite its Purosangue SUV still boasting a big V12 under the hood. This is a 715 hp unit, while the replacement for the 812 Superfast is set to retain V12 power with an 830 hp unit. These though could become the last V12 cars produced by Ferrari. The push for electrification and tighter emissions standards will see hybrid Ferraris become more commonplace. The SF90 Stradale itself has shown just how fast and potent hybrid Ferraris can be. And Ferrari is making good use of the technology that it is using in Formula 1, and now in the World Endurance Championship.
The Launch Comes As Ferrari Returns To The Le Mans 24 Hours
Ferrari is making its return to the top level of racing at Le Mans for the first time since 1973. This was with the 312 PB, a car that finished second in the hands of Arturo Merzario and Carlos Pace that year. Its last victory at the French enduro was even further back in 1965, so it’s been a long time coming for the Prancing Horse. It has competed in the GT categories since then, but not at the top level of endurance racing. Its new 499P has shown promise already, taking pole position in its debut at Sebring and earning podium finishes.
Various changes with the balance of performance ahead of the 2023 edition of the race mean Le Mans may be more exciting than ever. Ferrari has a legitimate shot at winning the race in the first year of its return, and it would cap off the launch of the SF90 Le Mans perfectly if the car does make its debut this weekend. It would be one of the biggest stories in motorsport this decade, and be a great boost to Ferrari which is having a tough time at the moment in Formula 1.
The SF90 Le Mans Is A Big Evolution From The SF90 Stradale
The new SF90 LM is certainly looking like it will offer a big change over the Stradale. The heavily revised exterior makes for a much more aggressive-looking supercar. While the Ferrari’s V8 engine is set to propel the SF90 faster than its ever been. The Prancing Horse is producing some of the finest supercars in the world right now, and its new SUV has taken the world by storm too. So it’s currently enjoying a purple patch when it comes to the production car side of its operations.
