Have you ever come across black roses growing naturally, without any human intervention? Although solid black rose images are prevalent on the internet, they are most likely the result of photoshop and not found in the wild.

A Facebook page by the name of Higher Perspective shared a video on May 25, 2016, which introduced a unique flower known as the “black rose”. This particular flower has a pure black color and grows completely naturally in just one house situated in a small village called Halfeti in the southeast region of Sanliurfa province, Turkey.

Back in 2013, there were rumors circulating about an incredibly rare black rose. According to an article on RocketNews24, these roses were said to grow in very small quantities and only in Halfeli, a Turkish village. This was allegedly due to the unique soil conditions and pH levels of the groundwater in the Euphrates River, which produced the magical black color of the flower.

However, Snopes.com, a website that debunks fake news, reported that there was some confusion surrounding this flower. RocketNews24 had actually sourced their information from a Japanese blog called Karapaia, which in turn, referenced a 2007 article from Today’s Zaman, based on a local news piece from Anatolia.

As different sources quoted each other, a number of errors crept into the story, leading to the birth of rumors about black roses that supposedly only grew in Turkey.

As of now, there is no proof of the existence of natural black roses in Turkey or anywhere else in the world. Although there are some species that resemble black roses, such as the deep red Black Magic Roses or Baccara Roses.

According to an article in the Daily Sabah newspaper, black roses have been mentioned but they are not entirely black as seen online. They are a combination of red and black and are commonly known as Karagül in Turkish. These flowers are quite expensive due to their unique scent and are considered a valuable item in the business world. However, in 2017, the Hurriyet Daily News reported that Karagül has become a rare flower and is difficult to find in the wild due to changing ecological dynamics. As a result, people have resorted to growing them in greenhouses. While the buds of these flowers appear dark black, the red color gradually becomes more prominent as the flower grows larger.
