Ndakasi the gorilla was a helpless 2-month-old infant when she was saved from the depths of the Congo.
Found by park rangers in the Virunga National Park, Ndakasi clung to her mother’s lifeless body, a victim of heartless poachers. However, her story is one of compassion and affection.
It was at the gorilla orphanage in the park that Ndakasi first encountered her lifelong caregiver, Andre Bauma. On her initial night there, Bauma refused to leave her side, ensuring she felt safe and protected.
The park authorities stated, “Amidst a relentless thunderstorm that lasted through the night, Andre cradled baby Ndakasi against his warm chest, providing solace and shelter. With Bauma’s unwavering support and the dedicated orphanage staff, Ndakasi grew up to lead a happy and healthy life.”
In 2019, Bauma and Ndakasi took a series of selfies, which were shared on social media by the park and quickly became popular.
Although Ndakasi lived a joyful and vibrant existence, her life tragically came to an end at a young age due to illness. The orphanage staff announced the news on social media, revealing that even in her final hours, she exuded love. “In the devoted embrace of her caregiver and lifelong friend, Andre Bauma, Ndakasi took her last breath.”
Ndakasi’s legacy will endure, and the compassionate individuals who granted her a second chance at life will continue their noble efforts.
