The HRT was formed in 1983 in response to the increased threat of terrorism against US citizens and interests. Since its inception, the HRT has been involved in numerous high-profile missions, including the rescue of hostages in the 1993 Branch Davidian siege in Waco, Texas, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing.
HRT operators are selected from experienced FBI special agents who have already completed several years of service in other FBI roles. They undergo a rigorous selection process, including physical and psychological evaluations, before undergoing an intensive training program that lasts several months.
The HRT is equipped with a range of specialized weapons and equipment, including armored vehicles, night vision goggles, and state-of-the-art communications gear. They are also capable of deploying by helicopter, allowing them to rapidly respond to hostage situations and other emergencies.
In addition to its primary mission of counter-terrorism and hostage rescue, the HRT also provides training and support to other law enforcement agencies across the United States. The team frequently conducts joint exercises with other agencies, including the Department of Defense and local SWAT teams, to ensure that they are prepared to respond to any situation that may arise.
