Sri Lanka Welcomes First Elephant Twins in Decades

On Tuesday, for the very first time in 80 years, twin elephants were birthed in bondage in Sri Lanka, according to wildlife officials.

A 25-year-old elephant called Surangi brought to life the twin men at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Reuters records. Their papa is 17-year-old Pandu, that additionally stays at the orphanage.

Renuka Bandaranaike, head of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, told BBC that “both the calves as well as the mother are doing penalty.”

“The children are fairly little, however they are healthy,” she added.

Sri Lankan elephant specialist Jayantha Jayewardene told the outlet that the last set of residential twin elephants birthed in the nation arrived in 1941.


Established in 1975, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage aims to help wild elephants seeking rescue or treatment for injuries. The shelter is currently residence to more than 90 of the pachyderms.

Elephants can deliver as much as 12 times in a lifetime as well as tend to have one calf at once. The possibility of an elephant having twins is around 1%, according to the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad.

7,500 elephants stay in Sri Lanka, per authorities records.
