World War II broke out in 1939 when Adolf Hitler invaded Poland. By the end of 1945, World War II had claimed the lives of about 50 million people and one of the battles that is considered the bloodiest in this period of history was the Battle of Normandy. The landings on the beaches of Normandy more than 70 years ago, known as Operation Overord or D-Day for short, began on June 6, 1944. The battle towards Nazi-occupied territory in Normandy (France) was a landmark victory for Allied troops.
Because the military force of Nazi Germany was very powerful at that time, it took the British, American and Canadian coalitions a whole month to control the town of Norman.
The entire campaign ended within two months, and the Nazi casualties were estimated at 320,000 and the Allies at around 230,000.
