The journey of adopting Lynxes and creating a diverse group of animals

As a self-proclaimed cat lover, it’s funny to think that I now have eight dogs in my care. They include six huskies, a Samoyed dog, and a Northern Inuit dog, which is quite the pack! Unfortunately, my love for felines meant that I couldn’t adopt a kitten with these hounds around. But I wasn’t going to let that stop me from having a cat in my home, so I decided to search for one that could get along with my dogs.
After conducting some research, I discovered that fur farms still operate in my country. These farms breed lynxes specifically for their fur, which is highly sought after in Russia. However, I was relieved to learn that it’s perfectly legal to take a baby lynx from such a farm and raise it as your own. Given the opportunity, I couldn’t resist taking in a tiny lynx cub who was destined to become a fur coat. Naming him Geralt, after the protagonist in the video game The Witcher, was an easy decision.

It was quite unexpected, but the dogs turned out to be a big help in taking care of Geralt. They engaged in playful activities with the kitten, letting him nibble on their ears and rest on their stomachs without any complaints. Plus, they even let him sneak bites of their food from time to time.

Our older canine companion, Banshee, graciously assumed the role of caretaker for a young lynx cub.

As Geralt matured, he developed a mischievous streak but became the highlight of all the huskies’ gatherings.

In addition, he has a good relationship with my horse named Texas!

After a challenging journey, I poured my heart into raising and training him with great success. He’s a unique blend of feline and canine characteristics.

At the tender age of one, Geralt gained a new feline companion thanks to my rescue efforts – a darling little girl kitten.

Bulochka earned her name for being an absolute sweetheart, as it means “bun” in our language.

Lynxes in the wild are known to be solitary creatures, so I initially expected my feline companions to live separately. However, I was pleasantly surprised when Geralt welcomed little Bulochka into his life as if she were his own daughter.

As we were discussing potential names for our new pet, our buddies playfully suggested the moniker “Ciri” instead of our original choice of “Bulochka.”

As someone who has experience raising two lynxes, I can attest that one of the most difficult aspects of rescuing these wild animals is ensuring their good health.

On fur farms, the main goal is breeding, which unfortunately comes at the expense of animal health and wellbeing.

Geralt has been fortunate to have only suffered a broken elbow and a toe in his lifetime, making him a healthy individual.

It’s not a daunting task to domesticate and teach the lynx. By making them familiar with a basic litter box for cats and coaching them to walk on a leash, it can be effortlessly achieved.

They also make a purring sound, just like house cats, but much more audible.

Currently, I am relishing my life in the company of my lynxes, huskies and horses, while also finding great joy in assisting those who have made the decision to rescue large felines, and subsequently raise and domesticate them.
