A group of Canadian firefighters weren’t expecting a surprise when they went to work that day, but fate seems to have a strange way of bringing great things into the hands of good people. As firefighters are used to helping people, when they saw a shivering calico kitten on a cold and snowy evening staring longingly through the station window, the officers brought her in and gave her lots of love and attention.
Given that she was so loving, they all thought that she must be a lost pet, so they began to post missing pet articles on various social media sites. So when no one claimed this adorable calico kitten after a reasonable time, the fire rescuers became animal rescuers, taken it upon themselves to forever take care of her and even called her Ember.
First they took her to the vets, she was given a good bill of health except for her slightly frostbitten ears.
Then she was immunized and given antibiotics for ear mites. Later on she was spayed.
After that, they gave Ember a much-needed bath.
“She had a bath and smells much better than when she showed up at our door,” the fire department wrote on their Facebook page.
Local social media users also fell in love with her when she showed up regularly on their Facebook page with “Ember Alerts” like this one:
“Yesterday Ember was taken to Pet Vet in Steinbach for a spa day (it was actually a spay day). She is healing up well. She has to be reminded that she has stitches, she just wants to play!”
This friendly calico kitten adored living in the fire station and everybody there loved her, even though it was impossible to give her loads of attention throughout the day.
A decision needed to be made.
“Steinbach does not have a full-time fire department so the station is not continuously staffed and a calico kitten like Ember needs a lot of love and attention and unfortunately the station can go days without someone being there.”
They knew the situation wasn’t ideal so they put out an appeal on Facebook…EMBER ALERT- As much as I might like to, it is not practical for me to stay at the fire station. I am now healed up from my surgery and ready for a new home. I would like to find a stable, loving, cat friendly home. If you are interested in adopting me please send an email to [email protected] Tell me a little about yourself, why you would like to adopt me and why I should come live with you.
They had an enormous response so didn’t take long for them to find Ember a loving forever home.
“She’s found a nice spot to call her own and has really made this home. I cannot believe how well behaved she is – exactly what we’ve been looking for,” her new family explained.
Everyone at the fire station was delighted that Ember was now part of a loving family and they wrote on Facebook:EMBER UPDATE – Ember now has a stable home and as a result the photos & reports will slow to a trickle as we will get on with the business of mostly fire posts. Ember is a lucky kitten, at only 6 months of age she found someone to help her. The sad truth is that she likely had litter mates who suffered a different fate.
We would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering the animals that rely on our compassion for their survival. Please support your local rescue who work tirelessly to help animals in need.
No one knows how this little calico kitten ended up outside the station all alone, but she found the right people to give her the help she needed.
When the firefighters noticed the kitten, they likely assessed her health and needs, making sure she was warm and had access to food and water. They may have also checked her for any injuries or illnesses and administered any necessary care.
If they were unable to locate her original owners, they likely took her to a local animal shelter or rescue organization for further care and placement into a new home. Alternatively, some fire stations have been known to adopt animals who come to them for help, giving them a new life as a beloved station pet.
No matter what happened next, the actions of the firefighters likely saved the kitten’s life and gave her a chance for a new beginning. It’s a reminder that sometimes, even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of animals in need.
