Police rescue kitten Mario stuck in a tube

A kitten called Mario “levels up” after climbing a ladder to escape a pipe deep underground.

With spring kitten season in full swing, it’s only a matter of time before kittens find themselves in deep trouble, in this case, down an open pipe. Unfortunately, we see this frequently, and it’s a great reminder to cover up drains and pipes so kittens, puppies, and other critters don’t fall inside.

Citizen on a Walk Hears Kitten 5 Feet Underground

In this case, a Good Samaritan, out for a morning walk, discovered the kitten that fell down an open pipe. This kitten was very deep down in the ground. But the little guy meowed for help so loudly that the passerby heard and thankfully investigated.

“A citizen who was out for their morning walk heard the kitten’s cries and called for help. *Purr-fect timing!* Upon his arrival, he found that this kitten had become trapped in an uncapped pipe approximately 5 feet down,” shared the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.

The kind person contacted the office, and Deputy Jones arrived. Then, his quick thinking allowed the kitten to climb to safety. Mario may not have had the strength if it had been a short time longer.

Deputy Made a Ladder for Mario

Ameowzingly, Deputy Jones made a ladder on the spot, and it worked!

“Deputy Jones took quick action and crafted a ladder for the kitten to climb high enough that he was able to bring it to safety.”

Then, the officers contacted the utility company to cover the dangerous open pipe.

Online, the community rallied around the deputy for saving the fuzzy furbaby. It’s heartwarming to see officers come to the rescue for animals, and they do so very often in the Sunshine State.

“Our fur friends are citizens too! Way to protect and serve, deputy!” said M. Rose.

Mario Escapes Pipe and Levels Up

Later in the month, the sheriff’s office shared some happy news: Deputy Jones adopted the kitten dubbed Mario! It’s a fitting name, as a little guy traveling through a pipe and climbing a ladder like Super Mario the video game. Now, he’s leveled up to be a boss, a pampered lapcat forevermore.

“A purr-fect ending! Citrus, you may remember earlier this month when CCSO Deputy Jones saved a kitten from cat-astrophe when he heard something coming from an uncapped pipe. A lot of you asked if he would be adopting this adorable kitten, and we have some good news! The Jones’ recently welcomed Mario into their family!”

What to Do About Open Pipes and Drains?

What should you do if you encounter an open pipe or hole and want to protect animals? The best idea is to consult a professional if it’s on your property; otherwise, contact local authorities to alert them of a hazard.

A professional plumber can assist with installing drain covers or wrapping exposed pipes. If you attempt a do-it-yourself solution, remember that you might encounter some unexpected and even dangerous problems of their own. Ask the pros what you could do for a temporary solution while waiting.

Meanwhile, storm drains, and sewers are another constant hazard for kittens and a favorite hunting ground for adult cats. During floods, large storm drains are also an ongoing hazard for people, especially kids. Check with a local water management office or utility to express concerns and suggest installing a grate or cover.

Officers and rescuers go to great lengths to save cats from all these dangerous situations all the time.  Well-done Deputy Jones and we’re sure Mario will be a furtastic addition to the family.

In the long run, the best plan is TNR (trap, neuter, return) for local feral cat populations. TNR effectively reduces the number of kittens that find themselves down an open pipe or who-knows-what!. They’re the cutest lil guys but have a knack for effortlessly getting into so many tight spots.
