Many stray cats wandering the streets of Shanghai have been lucky enough to be rescued by a rescue company in the past five years.
In recent days, an account called “Shanghai Cat Rescue Team” has attracted the attention of many Chinese netizens. This rescue team is actually the vehicle towing crane team of Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. They have been operating for over 10 years on the city’s highways dealing with the consequences of accident or damaged vehicles.
Since 2018, the company has cooperated with the Shanghai Road Traffic Center, traffic police and local pet associations to develop a process for rescuing stray cats. As of March 2023, they have dispatched more than 8,000 employees and 3,900 rescue vehicles and rescued more than 1,800 stray cats on Shanghai’s highways.
“When we started our work, we had no experience. We only caught cats by hand and had no protective equipment. Whenever we got close, they often ran away. Many people were scratched and bitten. Gradually, We are equipped with tools such as mesh bags, anti-bite gloves and even cat cages,” said employee Yu Bin from Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd.
After rescue, stray cats are taken to veterinary facilities for health checks. After that, the rescue team posted information on social networks to wait for adopters.
A resident named Feng Jia adopted two stray cats and now, they are considered family members by her whole family. Feng often shares pictures of them and thanks to that, her acquaintances learned about the “stray cat rescue team” on the highway in Shanghai.
