The biggest challenge in this rescue was the construction of the chimney, which was made of bricks. The slightest mistake in cutting the chimney could have caused a collapse. Hence, the team had to break the ‘upper part’ of the chimney where there was the least pressure. After an hour-long operation, the team successfully expanded the hole on the upper chimney, creating enough space to enter and rescue the cat.
However, there were pipes in the middle of the chimney that made it hard to pass through. Kim Yong-Hwan had to go down 2 more meters, grabbing onto pipes, to reach the cat. The cat had been stuck in the same spot for days and was not moving. Kim Yong-Hwan had to use his foot to make the cat move, and at that moment, the cat hung onto his body.
Finally, after a month or so of being trapped, the cat was out of the chimney. The cat was dirty, and the fumes from the chimney were not good for its health. The cat was taken to the vet, who confirmed that she did not have any fractures or lethal injuries in her internal organs. The cat’s nails were broken, indicating that she had tried to escape with all her life but had given up due to exhaustion.
The rescue was physically and mentally challenging for the team, but they succeeded in saving the cat’s life. The rescue operation was unique and challenging, but one thing is clear; no cat will be falling into that chimney again.
