The journey to find a home for a legless and earless mochi cat

Mochi is a munchkin cat that was originally bred in China before being brought to the US. Sadly, she suffered from ischemic dermatopathy, which caused the deterioration of some of her body parts, including her ears, tail, and right hind leg. Mochi traveled across the world to live with a family in Boston, but her severe health issues proved too much for them, and they surrendered her to the MSPCA-Angell rescue shelter. Despite her physical challenges, a couple named Greg and Natalia fell in love with Mochi and decided to take her in. They have fully embraced her, making her their first pet together, despite her unconventional appearance.

Bored Panda recently spoke with Greg McDouglas, the new owner of Mochi the cat, to learn more about her backstory. According to Greg, Mochi was originally bred and born in China as a munchkin kitten. She was then purchased by a family in Boston but soon began experiencing a mystery illness that caused necrosis, which led to her surrender to MSPCA-Angell, a special rescue shelter. Unfortunately, her condition had progressed significantly at that point, resulting in the amputation of one of her hind legs, both ears, and her tail, as well as a case of ringworm. Despite these challenges, Mochi now has a loving home with Greg and is thriving.

After spending two months under the care of the shelter’s doctors, Mochi made a remarkable recovery. During her treatment, she was quarantined for her safety. However, the kind doctors were able to nurse her back to full health. Once she had fully recuperated, the shelter listed her for adoption. Luckily, Natalia, my animal-loving fiancée, saw the listing and instantly fell in love with her. The following day, the shelter contacted us to inform us that we had been chosen to adopt Mochi. Initially, I tried to maintain a cool demeanor and suggested that we meet her first. Nevertheless, when we finally met her on January 22nd, 2023, we both immediately fell in love with her and decided to take her home. Sadly, due to the severity of her condition, Mochi had to undergo amputations of one of her hind legs, both ears, and her tail. Nonetheless, she has been with us for over two months now, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the joy she brings to our lives.

After learning about Mochi’s adoption story, we wanted to know more about her personality and daily routines in her new home. Greg shared that Mochi is an extremely sweet and lively cat who enjoys playing games like hide and seek. She is also quite vocal, often communicating with her owners through meows, chirps, and squeaks. Mochi is very affectionate and loves belly rubs, head scratches, and sleeping on Natalia’s head at night. She craves attention and meeting new people, and is always up for exploring and trying new things. Greg and Natalia adore Mochi and spoil her with love. Adopting Mochi has been one of their happiest decisions, and she brings them so much joy.

When asked about Mochi’s wellbeing, Greg replied with optimism and caution. He believes that Mochi will have a long, happy, and healthy life, but they need to be careful with her. Due to a suspected vaccine reaction during her initial illness, Mochi cannot receive vaccines. Her three legs require them to be mindful of her weight, as she enjoys eating, and they need to clean her ears carefully. Nonetheless, Mochi is healthy and energetic, as confirmed by her recent veterinary check-up. Natalia and Greg were quick to apply for adoption after seeing Mochi’s listing.

Our interest peaked when we heard the adorable name of their new pet and we asked about its origin. Their response was that Mochi resembled a sweet vanilla mochi ice cream ball, while others thought she looked like an owl, seal, otter, cloud, potato, or even a ferret. Regardless of what people saw in her, one thing was certain – Mochi was a stunning creature! The couple’s love for Mochi only grew stronger after meeting her the following day.

We were curious about how Mochi’s health concerns impact her daily activities, given her past medical history. To shed light on this, Greg revealed that they take great care to ensure Mochi has a relaxing routine to prevent any potential autoimmune reactions. Although she cannot go outside, she enjoys free roam of their home and usually spends her time sleeping in their bed or a cozy kitty bed nearby. Surprisingly, Mochi is a quiet sleeper throughout the night. In the morning, she has lots of energy after eating and loves to play games with her owners. If she’s in the mood to play, she’ll meow and try to coax them into playing hide and seek. Despite her health challenges, Mochi is a charming and playful kitten who brings joy to her owners’ lives.

According to Greg, their furry friend has a playful routine that she follows. Whenever they approach her, she quickly scurries away and hides. But as soon as they get closer, she pops out from her hiding spot to check if they are still following her. If they do, she runs off again only to repeat this game over and over until she tires herself out. Eventually, she surrenders and lays on her back, waiting for belly rubs while licking their hands. She enjoys napping in different areas of the house and loves playing with the laser pointer, running up and down the stairs, and sprinting around the house. Due to her difficulty in running straight, she moves around like a snake. Watching TV is one of her favorite activities, and she happily chows down on her wet food.

Running in a straight line poses a little challenge for her and she moves in a sidestepping motion akin to a snake’s slithering movement.

Aside from that, she acts like any typical feline, enjoying the sport of scaling up the sofa, seats, and sleeping quarters.
